Living for God ?

Does anyone have thoughts on what Jesus meant by the following:

"I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be." John 12:24-26

No One Makes a Fool of God

In his sermon last week, Dr. Miles emphasized, "Life is what you love, not what loves you." Galatians 6:7-10, the scripture accompanying his sermon, included, "the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good."

Note: While this blog contains some quotes, it is based on one interpretation of Dr. Miles' sermon, and is not intended to be an exact recitation. If you missed the sermon, you are encouraged to listen to the entire message that is available at the Country Club Christian Church web site: www.cccckc.org.

Some of the highlights may help us in thinking about this week's Sunday School topic, "What do we have to do to get closer to living our lives as God wants us to."

One part of the sermon focused on what it takes to live a life of inclusive love for everyone. We sing, "How Great Thou Art," but do we then keep God at a distance? Change brings fear, but the message brought forth in the New Testament was the need to convert from living for yourself to living for God. Are we afraid of the demands God might make, or are we working towards accepting these demands and carrying them forth? What do we need to change about our lives to live completely for God?

In another part of his sermon, Dr. Miles pointed out that Jesus would not have been crucified if he was a "nice person." Living for God does not mean simply going with the flow and avoiding upsetting others. Jesus tore down walls, upset the temple, and in many ways was a revolutionist who upset the status quo. How does this affect our view of what it means to live for God, and to live a life of inclusive love? It does not seem to mean live lives so others love us. "Life is what you love, not what loves you."

Where is God today?

Do you have ideas about where God is, what He is doing, what He wants, what He is offering you? Jesus said the kingdom of heaven is within you. Jesus said if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can move mountains. What path are you on?
